Ok, figured it out. You also need to set Book to LOW and deviate very quickly from well known openings, so that the program has to evaluate moves instead of relying on the book.

But I also tried A1 Chess. My 7-year old loves it. Thanks!

Try other styles. Passive may not necessarily be the one where your son wins. I have tried aggressive and seen easier games than Passive. Why don't you try that?

Are you sure the level==1? I will try out level 1 and see if it is too strong.

For your son's express use, a1 chess free is probably not a bad idea.

I'm (or rather my 7-year old is) trying out Glaurung on my ipod touch. What settings make it easy? I tried setting it style=Passive and level=1 but even that is quite solid. I'd like him to win once in a while so he's not too discouraged!
